Poetry Night

My son’s school had a poetry night tonight.  He warned me that we’d have to write poems.  I have to admit, I wasn’t looking forward to tonight.  The thought of reading poems, let alone writing them transported me to my college years faster than a red cup next to a keg.

But I actually had fun!  Go figure.  And The Fonz’s poems where really heartfelt and left me feeling all squishy with pride.

Then we (the parents) were taught how to write poems by our kids.  Here are mine:

Assignment:  Write an “Ode” Poem
On Oracle Library ThinkQuest they describe and Ode Poem like this:  “An ode is a poem that is written for an occasion or on a particular subject. They are usually dignified and more serious as a form than other forms of poetry. Unfortunately, today’s society has distinctly less respect for propriety, morality, and dignity.”my trusty shower cap

Assignment: Write an Acrostic Poem
Wikipedia describes an Acrostic Poem like this: “An acrostic is a poem or other form of writing in which the first letter, syllable or word of each line, paragraph or other recurring feature in the text spells out a word or a message[1].

Title: Henry Island
(Note:  Henry Island is an island in the San Juan Islands in Washington State.  My parents built a cabin there before I was born.  I’ve spent every summer up there and continue this tradition with my family and their families.)

Henry Island Crew
as my heart
Escape the world
Never changing, always changing
Running on the path
Youth restored

I’m happy when I’m there
Summer days
Lazy days
Always a part of me
Now it’s my kids’ turn
Dreams unfold and blossom
